The Crawler is constructed for long term observations and long term measurements on the seafloor and for maintenancefree operation periods of up to one year. To avoid damages by the sea water the Crawler is completely made of titanium and plastic. Depending on the version the Crawler can be used in operational depths of 2000, 4000 or 6000 meters.
In the years since, there has been a great deal of research and exploration in this field. However, except for shallow water diamond mining off the coast of Southern Africa, no commercial deepsea mining operation has yet been started. Now it seems that 2020 may actually be the year that commercial deepsea ocean mining starts in earnest.
