Opportunities. Indonesia is the strongest potential in SE Asia for mining supply industry growth. The Government regulating ore processing is encouraging investment in downstream value, as companies have announced investments in Indonesian based processing facilities.
The ore undergoes primary crushing at the mine, before being delivered by ore passes to the mill complex for further crushing, grinding and flotation. Grasbergs milling and concentrating complex is the largest in the world, with four crushers and two giant semiautogenous grinding (SAG) units processing a daily average of 240,000t of ore.
Mining copper About 200 years ago the UK was an important world source of copper and tin and there were mines in Cornwall and Devon. These mines have now closed and today the biggest copper mines are in Chile (ndida mine) and Indonesia (Grasberg mine). These produce many millions of tonnes of copper ore per year.
The mining process. Copper ore is mined in our X41 and Enterprise underground mines, where it is roughly crushed, then hoisted to the surface for processing. From here, it is fed through a series of ball mills that grind the rock into a fine dust.
Extraction and refining. The extraction of copper from ore is normally carried out in three major steps. The first step, mineral processing, is to liberate the copper minerals and remove waste constituentssuch as alumina, limestone, pyrite, and silicaso that the copper minerals and other nonferrous minerals of value are concentrated into a product containing between 20 and 30 percent copper.
Copper concentrate is fed into the ISASMELT furnace, where it is heated to 1185 degrees Celsius. This process melts the concentrate into liquid, drawing out impurities and releasing sulfur dioxide gas, which is captured and piped to the Incitec Pivot Acid Plant adjacent to our smelter stack for conversion into sulphuric acid, used in crop fertilisers.
